Our younger patients have a great experience as well…It’s important to start children early in the right direction to good dental hygiene. A starting time for that first dental exam is when your child has a total of eight teeth, usually around age one. You can make the first visit to the dentist enjoyable and positive. Your child should be informed of the visit and told that the dentist and staff will explain all procedures and answer any questions. The less to-do concerning the visit, the better.
Dr. Abbett and her staff enjoy working with children and education them on their oral health.
Preventive dentistry is our goal for every patient. Daily dental hygiene (brushing and flossing), good nutrition (fruit instead of sweets), and periodic checkups all play a role in keeping teeth and gums healthy and strong. For our denture wearers, we also encourage denture checkups once a year. An ounce of prevention means fewer dental appointments and a more confident smile.
Dentistry has changed. It’s never been so safe or comfortable. If you feel anxious (and many people do), special training enables us to put you completely at ease. New medications and techniques take the fear out of your dental visit, and our staff’s understanding and gentle manner help soothe your jitters.
We have lots of great articles and information in the News section of our website if you want to learn more about general and dental health.

If you have a dental emergency, call us! We’ll do everything possible to take care of the problem and make you comfortable that day. Not every practice will treat dental emergencies, since they can disrupt the appointment schedule. But we want to be your dental resource whenever it’s needed most. We’re available directly by phone during normal office hours. At other times, contact our answering service and describe the emergency. We’ll get back to you as quickly as we can.
Infection control in our office is also very important to us. To protect our patients and ourselves, we strictly maintain sterilization and cross contamination processes using standards recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
We’ll be happy to show you the many precautions we have in place, and answer any of your questions. Your safety is our highest priority.
We welcome new patients and do everything we can to make you feel safe and welcome. As a practice, we are true believers that preventative care and education are the keys to optimal dental health. We strive to provide “dental health care” vs. “disease care.” That’s why we focus on thorough exams – checking the overall health of your teeth and gums, performing oral cancer exams, and taking x-rays when necessary. We also know that routine cleanings, flossing, sealants, and fluoride are all helpful in preventing dental disease. Not only are we focused on the beauty of your smile, we’re also concerned about your health. A review of your medical history can help us stay informed of your overall health, any new medications, and any illnesses that may impact your dental health.
Four out of five people have periodontal disease and don’t know it! Most people are not aware of it because the disease is usually painless in the early stages.
Not only is it the number one reason for tooth loss, research suggests that there may be a link between periodontal disease and other diseases such as, stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and increased risk during pregnancy. Researchers are determining if inflammation and bacteria associated with periodontal disease affects these systemic diseases and conditions. Smoking also increases the risk of periodontal disease.
